Report from the Road

July 4, 2005
Independence Day and Vanessa's BIRTHDAY !

Somewhere on I-74 in Central Illinois. Detours abound.

We enjoyed a wonderful holiday weekend camping with Beene and Thunder at the Brown County Horseman's Park.

There was no cell service so we were unable to post here.
We camped behind Clarence and Ken the farrier team in our area. We experienced Racking Horse races in camp. The pro was 14 year old Ross. He sat atop a 17 h Jet-Black Rackling horse and rode it well.

Mike, Ross's Dad told us that Ross been riding
since he could walk. The two were part of a mixed group that had base camp next to us and took their own wilderness adventure. They rode 10 hours into the next county to camp out under the stars at a remote lake.

They were set for the trek with saddle bags loaded with ice and beer. They said that by the time they reached the lake all the ice was mented and the beer was gone. So, they settled their wiery bodies into their bed rolls and slept soundly until dawn not knowing that they were dinner for colonie of chiggers who were weekending there,as well.

The Park and area was wonderfully free of flying insects. We had to check each other for ticks and chiggers. We were warned about rattlesnakes, too from riders coming back from the town of Story.

SUNDAY: We took a 20 mile ride on their "scenic trail". We didn't want to take the boys on the "challenging trail" this early on the trip. We stopped at the Story Inn and sampled the local ecclectic cuisine. Ten years ago we stopped there, too. The place was changed since '95 ... for the better. Van had a cobbler made of Raspberry Rhubarb topped with vanilla icecream made at a small dairy just down the street. I opted for the protein meal, an 3 egg omelet with wild mushrooms, brie and leeks. The plate was topped with fresh dill weed sprigs and a squash blossom. We arrived at the end of lunch and missed the piano/viola duet. It was pricy but welcome after a four and a half hours in the saddle.

We took the short trail back to camp walking the boys a good part of the way. The decent into camp was steep and we wanted to save their down hill miles. Well, we're going to break off here so we can get this into the cosmos.
